The Religion of Ancient Rome does a wonderful job of discussing the ancient Roman religion, before being influenced by Egyptian, and especially, Greek Culture. The author was interested in and has written a tight short book (just under 1,000 locations) about the insubstantial, unknown ancient gods, spirits, thoughts, call them what you will, but the impact of religion on Rome's founding. The author does a good job of explaining how the household was the key element in ancient Rome and how often Romans of the Republic didn't even remember why they did some of the ritual or who a god might have been.

Easy recommendation if you have any interest in history, mythology or especially Rome.

This link and insight from this book will dramatically open up the understanding concerning the primitive Christian Church and the why they were hated. It may also carry over to understanding of contemporary.society. Read it to mentally enter into the parent of today's nation.
I learned some things about ancient Roman religion that I had not known before. For one of the first books read on , it was challenging to keep my interest. Good as a background reference.
As an overview this fee kindle version is pretty good. The only reasons I didn't give it 5 stars is 1) it's older and some info is out of date and 2) like many works like this, the author is condescending be at times. But overall, it was good.
Boring
This was a good book how ever I do wish the Author had done more to make it more interesting. I look forward to reading more of this author's work.
this book is an outline of roman religion. it is short and to the point. it is difficult to know for sure how roman religion was practice as it was banned by Christians. a better book would be "introduction to roman religion" available on the kindle store. I wish there was more on specific ritual and rites. it doesn't talk much about mystery cults or how temples were managed.
Cyril Bailey (1871-1957) was an English classical scholar who studied at Balliol College, Oxford University, and later became a Fellow of the College and a tutor there. His main fame is as an editor, translator and commentator on the ancient Roman poet Lucretius. This book, "The Religion of Ancient Rome," was his second text, written while he was working at Balliol College. It was proof-read by the English historian William Warde Fowler (1847-1921), a Fellow of Lincoln College, Oxford University, who become an expert on the ancient religion of Rome. Bailey’s book is a very brief introduction to the pre-Christian religion of ancient Rome, sometimes called 'The Religion of Numa' after Numa Pompilius, the second king of Rome. Bailey outlines the origins and development of Roman religion, its main characteristics, the features of private religion (worship of the household) and public religion (worship of the state), the main festivals of Roman religion, the religious “science” of augury, and the relationship between Roman religion and morality. Bailey’s "The Religion of Ancient Rome" is directed to the reader with no knowledge of the subject-matter. For a comprehensive and highly detailed exposition of the religion of ancient Rome, Fowler’s "The Religious Experience of the Roman People" (1911), based on the Gifford Lectures given by Fowler at Edinburgh University in 1909-1910, is recommended.
